Laser resurfacing is commonly used to treat facial wrinkles, acne treatment and skin irregularities. During this procedure pulsating beam of light is exposed to the irregular skin surface, which results in removing the skin layer by layer. This procedure of skin layers through laser is referred to lasabrasion, laser vaporization or laser peel.
Candidates for Laser Resurfacing
If you are having fine lines or wrinkles on your face then you must go for laser skin resurfacing treatment. Fine lines or wrinkles are generally observed around your eyes, mouth or on your forehead which can be treated with the help of laser peel.
In few cases the non responsive skin resulting after a facelift surgery can also be removed through laser skin resurfacing. Apart from wrinkles, acne and dark skin can also be treated with laser skin resurfacing. Laser resurfacing is not suitable for stretch marks
Types of Laser Resurfacing
There are two types of lasers that are commonly used in laser resurfacing treatment.
-
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
CO2 laser resurfacing is commonly used to treat different types of skin problems like wrinkles, scars and warts. Enlarged oil glands on the nose can also be treated with CO2 laser resurfacing. CO2 laser resurfacing uses short pulsed light energy called ultra pulse or continuous beam of light that is delivered in a scanning pattern to remove the skin layers with minimal damage. CO2 laser resurfacing generally takes up to 2 weeks for complete recovery.
-
Erbium Laser Resurfacing
Erbium laser resurfacing is especially designed to remove the deep lines and wrinkles on your face, hands, neck and chest. Erbium laser resurfacing causes minimal burning of surrounding tissues present near the affected area.
In few cases laser resurfacing leads to swelling, bruising and redness. Erbium laser resurfacing works better in case of darker skin tone people.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Before starting this procedure, eyes shields are provided to protect your cornea and retina from laser. During laser resurfacing a wand is passed over your skin and the resurfacing laser will emit a brief pulse of high intensity light that damages the upper layers of your skin. As the skin heals after the procedure, new younger looking tissue emerges.
There are different devices that are used for laser resurfacing. The most commonly used devices include:
- Ablative laser
- Non-ablative laser
- Fractional laser
Laser skin resurfacing is usually performed with local anaesthesia. In few cases oral sedatives are also used. Extensive laser skin resurfacing treatments require intravenous anaesthesia. Once anaesthesia is administered, your surgeon will make use of special laser. Precise beam of laser light is used which helps in vaporising your skin and makes your skin more smooth and results in younger looking skin.
The old layers of skin are removed with laser and as the skin heal it leads to the development of new skin cells. Laser skin resurfacing generally takes around 1 hour depending on the area that needs to be treated. The heat damage to skin is limited with skin resurfacing technique.
