    November 24, 2016

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that is done mainly to replace the hair from the donor site to the bald area on your head. During hair transplantation procedure, hair is moved from back or side of the head to the front or top of the head.  Hair transplantation is generally due to genetic disorder that can lead to alopecia, commonly called as baldness.

Hair transplantation can be done in both men and women who is suffering from permanent baldness or thinning of hair. Hair transplantation is also preferred in cases where the person had a burn or scalp injury that caused baldness.

Hair transplantation is classified into 2 categories:

    1. Micro grafts – Micro grafts contain 1-2 hairs per graft
    2. Slit grafts – Slit grafts generally contain 4-10 hairs per graft

    Hair Transplantation Procedure

During the hair transplantation procedure, your scalp is cleaned and local anaesthesia is used to numb an area of your head where surgery will be done. With the help of a scalpel a round section of your scalp in removed that is covered with hair. This removed section of your scalp is separated into small sections with the help of a surgical knife and a magnifying lens.

These sections will help you achieve natural looking hair growth after implantation.  Tiny holes are made with the help of a surgical needle in the part of your head that will receive hair transplant. In these tiny holes the hairs are placed gently.

Hair transplantation session generally takes 4-5 hours depending on the type of baldness. The Cosmetic surgeon will cover your scalp with grafts and bandages. You need to keep your head covered for few days for better results.

Stitches will be removed after 10 days of the surgery and more than one session will be required to achieve dense hair. Sessions and timing usually depend on the type of baldness you are suffering with.

What Happens After a Hair Transplant?

After the hair transplantation surgery, you need to take certain antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs that will help in reducing the risk of infection and inflammation. In most of the cases your hair starts falling after 2-3 weeks of the surgery, which is quite normal. When the hair falls after 2-3 weeks, it is making way for the new hair to grow. New hair growth is seen in 6-9 months of the surgery.

The new hair density depends on the following factors:

    1. Scalp laxity
    2. Density of hair follicle in the recipient zone
    3. Hair quality
    4. Hair curl
