Comparing Two Hair Restoration Methods: FUE vs. FUT

    February 13, 2017

Hair restoration or hair transplantation methods are quite similar and is basically done to get your natural looking hair back and get rid of baldness. Hair transplantation procedures generally provide permanent results that look natural. Medical technology not only helps in restoring your hair but can also enhance your appearance externally.

During hair transplantation procedure a large number of hair follicles are extracted and transplanted from the donor site to the bald area. Hair transplantation procedures generally give permanent results when compared to other hair restoration methods.

Generally during this hair transplantation procedure certain grafts/ follicles are removed from the back of your head that are more resistant to hormonal changes and are placed in the bald area. The recipient site will generally be the area with scanty growth.

    Types of Hair Transplantation Techniques

Hair transplantation is basically classified into two categorized based on the removal of grafts or follicles namely:

    1. Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)

During the follicular unit transplantation, a small strip of tissue from the back of your head is removed. From the same strip of tissue, the donor hair follicles will be extracted and harvested. This procedure is mostly used in case of excess hair loss or baldness in the recipient site.

FUT method allows the cosmetic surgeon to completely utilize your scalp area to deliver permanent results. During this procedure more number of grafts are transplanted in a single session.

    Pain management

Unlike FUE, a higher level of discomfort is reported during FUT. Swelling is mostly seen in the area from where the strip of tissue is removed. FUT and FUE are mostly outpatient surgeries that allow you to resume back to work the next day of the surgery.

    Scarring

Narrow linear scars are generally seen at the back of your head. The size of the scars will typically be 1mm in diameter or less in size. The scars are usually thin that can be concealed easily and becomes less noticeable with time.

    1. Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction is a procedure in which each follicular unit is individually removed directly from the scalp without removing any strip of the tissues. During this procedure certain hair follicles are removed in a random fashion and transplanted to the recipient site.

FUE is generally preferred in case of less number of grafts that needs to be transplanted. Removing the grafts in a random fashion will not affect your appearance and in most of the cases it is not even noticeable.

    Pain Management

FUE does not require any stitches and there is no linear scar that is left to get healed. The healing time is comparatively less than FUT. FUE procedure is known for less post-procedure discomfort when compared to FUT.

    Scarring

There are no scars that need to be recovered after this treatment as it mainly involves removing hairs individually from your scalp. Generally tiny 1mm diameter or less puncture marks are seen after the treatment which can heal on their own after scabbing over in few days. The time required to heal this tiny wounds are 3-7 days.
